エクアドル史上最悪となった今回の地震は、沿岸地域を中心に死者600人、負傷者1万2,000人以上という犠牲を出しました。政府と国際機関による推計では52万人がこの地震の被害を受け、食糧支援を必要としています。国連WFPの第一弾の支援は、震災からわずか3日後に現地に到着しましたが、徐々に被害の全容が明らかになりつつあります。「地震により、多くの人々が収入と食糧を得られなくなったことで、食糧不安が増大する恐れがあります」と国連WFPラテンアメリカ・カリブ海地域局長ミゲル・バレットは言います。政府の要請に基づき、国連WFPは4月19日にマナビ州のポルトビエホの街まで緊急支援食糧を届けました。職員が配給作業を手伝い、マナビで最も支援を必要としている家庭や病院など、およそ5万人余に食糧を届けることができました。同時に、現地での人道支援活動を支えるべく、200万米ドルの予算で支援物資輸送活動を開始。

キルギス南部の村アチョイでは、800世帯以上の家族が興奮に包まれています。新たに建設された灌漑用水路の開通により、彼らの生活が変わろうとしているのです。 この新しい水へのアクセスにより、地元の農家は年に3回の収穫が可能になります。用水路ができる前でも、水が十分にあった良い年には、家族が生活していくのに十分な食料を生産し、収穫の少ないシーズンに備えて蓄えることができました。しかし水が不足した昨年は、収穫があまりにも不作だったため、農家は子どもたちを養うために、種の蓄えの一部を売らなければなりませんでした。   「果樹園全体が干上がり、人々が飢えていくのを見てきました」 アチョイ出身の65歳の農民で、生涯を畑で過ごしてきたジュスプベクさんは、地域のすべての家族、彼らの日々の課題、そして水に対する共通の切実な必要性を知っています。

あなたは毎日の食卓にいくら払えますか？自宅で簡単に作れる食事を思い浮かべてください。ほどよくお腹を満たし、一日に必要なカロリーの約3分の1を補えるもの。例えば、一皿のスープ。豆や、一握りのお米、またはパンやコーン、トマトのスープなど…例えば、アメリカのニューヨーク州では、このような食事を作るためにほとんど費用がかかりません。平均的な一日の所得の0.6％にあたる、1.2米ドル（約130円）で作ることができます。しかし、同じ食事が、貧しい国々ではとても手の出ないものとなります。紛争下にある南スーダンでは、収入における食費の割合が先進国の300倍も高くなります。言い換えれば、ニューヨークに住む人が先に述べたような、シンプルな一皿のスープに約350米ドル（3万8,500円） も払わなければならないということです。
