WFP STARTS FOOD AIRLIFT TO CHILDREN IN EASTERN DRC, AMID FEARS OF FUNDING CRISIS KINSHASA - The United Nations World Food Programme said today that it has recently started airlifting urgent food aid to at least 8,800 needy people in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, although it has not yet received any funding pledges for next year’s operations.

WFP 国連世界食糧計画はこの週末にかけて、ソマリアとケニアでの洪水により道路を遮断され、病気の蔓延に苦しんでいる１００万人以上の人々に向け、空輸での食糧援助を開始し、同時に陸路と水路からの援助活動も拡大した。WFPは今後数週間で、1,000トンの食糧やその他の物資を空輸することを目指している。これらの物資は国連機関やNGOによってソマリアのシャベレ川、ジュバ川沿いの洪水地帯の村に届けられる。11月以降、計6,200トンのWFPの食糧物資が水路、陸路、空路でソマリア中央部と南部の被災者30万人に配給された。ケニアでは今回の洪水により、北部・北東部の６ヶ所の地域で、およそ56万3千人のケニア人が直接的な被害に遭っていると推定される。同地域のさらに52万人は、以前より干ばつに苦しんでいたところに重ねて洪水の被害を受けたため、引き続き食糧援助を必要としている。

BEIRUT - Lebanon will soon be food secure again and its commercial sector is bouncing back quicker than expected, paving the way for the withdrawal of the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) from the country by the end of October, according to a WFP food assessment and nutrition report issued today.
