ITALY DONATES US$1.2 MILLION TO CASH-STRAPPED WFP OPERATIONS IN SUDAN KHARTOUM – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed an Italian donation of Euros 1 million (US$1.2 million) towards its emergency operation in Sudan, which is providing food assistance to more than 6.1 million people throughout 2006.

WFP News Release 26 October 2006 SHORTAGE OF DONATIONS IMPACT SAHRAWI REFUGEES IN ALGERIA ALGIERS – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP)) is facing increasing difficulties in providing food assistance to Sahrawi refugees living in remote camps near Tindouf in southwest Algeria – a concern also shared by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).

= English texts to follow = 10月16日は「世界食料デー」。2019年のテーマは「未来をつくる私たちのアクション：飢餓のない世界は健康的な食生活から」です。 最新の推計では、2018年の世界の飢餓人口は8億2000万人以上とみられ、世界総人口のおよそ9人に1 人が飢餓に直面しています。この飢餓人口はここ数年連続でゆるやかに増加しています。一方、不健康な食生活がもたらす肥満の割合は世界のどの地域でも上昇傾向にあり、あらゆる形態の栄養不良の課題に取り組むことが求められています。

マナグア発　−　WFPは9月13日、ニカラグア北部で猛威をふるったハリケーン・フェリックスの被災者10万人を支援するため、緊急支援に向けて1700万米ドル(約20億円)の拠出を要請すると発表した。 被害を受けた1万戸の家屋のうち80％は全壊。井戸5200基が汚染され、野外トイレ6000基も損壊した。下痢の症状を示す子どもたちが増えており、衛生状態の劣化が懸念されている。また、ココナッツ、バナナ、マンゴー、米など人々の基礎的な食糧となる作物が大きな被害を受けた他、耕作地の塩害により12月期の収量も大幅に減少すると予測されている。 WFPはハリケーン上陸当日から緊急支援を続けており、先週末には151トンの食糧(1万5000人に対する20日分)がニカラグア北部のビルウィの港へ届けられた。今後3ヶ月間は、緊急時用の割当で配給を行い、その後復興支援へと移行する予定だ。

チャド首都・ヌジャメナ発−戦闘の拡大により、チャド東部での人道支援が困難になりつつある。チャド東部の都市・アベシェでは先月末、武装勢力によって食糧庫が襲撃され、483トンの食糧が略奪された。ＷＦＰはこのような不安定な状況下での活動は危険と判断し、学校給食プログラムや労働の対価としての食糧援助などの復興支援を一時的に中断するという苦渋の決断を下した。活動の中断は少なくとも5万6千人のチャド人に影響するとみられている。さらに、戦闘が激しさを増すにつれ、WFPをはじめとする国連機関やNGOが、チャド東部の都市・アベシェを拠点とする活動を縮小せざるをえないという事態に直面している。 しかし、WFPは緊急支援については継続の予定。12月分の食糧物資はすでに東部1２か所の難民キャンプに届き、一部では配給が始まっている。

WFP WARNS OF KENYA DROUGHT DISASTER; FOOD AID RUNS OUT IN WEEKS NAIROBI - The United Nations World Food Programme gave a stark warning today of a humanitarian disaster in Kenya because of drought, saying that WFP would run out of food aid within weeks for 2.5 million people in the drought-stricken north and east unless new donations were received immediately.

WFP’S DAUNTING TASK: FEEDING 1.7 MILLION REFUGEES IN 2006 GENEVA – As the media and the humanitarian community focus on the spreading drought in the Horn of Africa, the United Nations World Food Programme is deeply concerned that more attention is needed to highlight the persistent problems faced by the world’s refugees – most of them in Africa.

SUDAN BOOSTS SELF-HELP WITH SCHOOL MEAL SUPPORT KHARTOUM – The United Nations World Food Programme today praised decisions by governors of three Sudan States to renew and expand their support to WFP school meals by committing precious resources to monitoring, transport and other support. WFP urged international donors to follow suit.

WFP SAYS ONSET OF LONG RAINS IN KENYA TOO LATE FOR MILLIONS IN NEED OF FOOD NAIROBI – The United Nations World Food Programme warned today that despite a good start to the long rains falling in the epicentre of the regional drought, millions of nomadic herders and subsistence farmers in Kenya remained in desperate need of sustained assistance until they can rebuild their lives.
