WFP LAUNCHES MAJOR AIR OPERATION FOR FLOOD VICTIMS IN SOMALIA, KENYA NAIROBI – The United Nations World Food Programme today launched a regional air operation to provide fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters to transport aid workers and humanitarian assistance to more than a million people in Somalia and Kenya hit by the worst floods in years.
WFP FACES MAJOR SETBACKS & DEVELOPMENTS IN ITS ABILITY TO DELIVER URGENT AID TO LEBANON , Overnight bombing of the highway north from Beirut to the Syrian border has cut the road in at least three places and reportedly destroyed critical bridges. This could effectively sever the vital humanitarian lifeline between Lebanon and the outside world.
VIOLENCE ALONG CHAD/SUDAN BORDER THREATENS THOUSANDS N’DJAMENA – The United Nations World Food Programme warned today that an escalation of the violence that has forced thousands of people from their homes along the Chadian border with Sudan’s Darfur region could seriously impede humanitarian assistance. WFP currently feeds 207,400 Sudanese refugees housed in 12 camps inside Chad.
