WFP URGENTLY SENDS MORE EMERGENCY FOOD AID TO CONFLICT VICTIMS IN DRC KINSHASA – The United Nations World Food Programme said today that urgently needed WFP food aid was being airlifted aboard helicopters from the United Nations Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) for thousands of people fleeing fighting in Katanga Province of the eastern DRC.

WFP WARNS OF DETERIORATING HUMANITARIAN SITUATION IN GAZA JERUSALEM – Ahead of an international donor conference this week on the reconstruction of Lebanon in the Swedish capital, Stockholm, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) warned today that the situation in Lebanon must not be allowed to overshadow the rapidly deteriorating living conditions of the people in Gaza.

WFP WARNS OF KENYA DROUGHT DISASTER; FOOD AID RUNS OUT IN WEEKS NAIROBI - The United Nations World Food Programme gave a stark warning today of a humanitarian disaster in Kenya because of drought, saying that WFP would run out of food aid within weeks for 2.5 million people in the drought-stricken north and east unless new donations were received immediately.

8月16日(日本時間)にペルーで発生した大地震の被災者に対し、WFPは地震発生から12時間後に緊急支援を開始。ペルーに備蓄されていた食糧や、隣国エクアドルの備蓄倉庫から緊急空輸した高タンパク質ビスケット９トンなどを含め、すでに500トン以上の食糧を被災者に配給した。 　WFPは今後9ヶ月の間、8万人を対象に緊急支援事業を行う予定。特に2歳以下の子ども、女性、高齢者などの弱者に対しては、栄養状態が悪化しないよう重点的に支援を行っていく。また、インフラの復旧工事を行う際には工事現場で働く人たちに対して食糧を配給するなどし、復興作業も後押ししていく予定である。 　この緊急支援事業に必要な資金は610万米ドル。うち、200万ドルは国連中央緊急対応基金（CERF)から拠出を受けるが、残りの400万ドル余りは各国政府や企業、個人からの支援金が頼みの綱となるため、WFPは国際社会に支援を呼びかけている。

WFP WARNS OF CATASTROPHE IN HORN OF AFRICA, AHEAD OF AU SUMMIT NAIROBI - In the run up to the African Union summit in Khartoum this month, the United Nations World Food Programme today warned that a humanitarian catastrophe would engulf the drought-stricken Horn of Africa unless WFP receives urgent donations to provide emergency food aid for an estimated 5.4 million people.
