HARVEST PROSPECTS FOR SOUTHERN AFRICA PROMISING BUT LONG-TERM PROBLEMS PERSIST JOHANNESBURG – James T. Morris, the U.N. Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Humanitarian Needs in Southern Africa, said on Thursday that southern Africa may be on the cusp of better harvests but the underlying causes of the region’s four-year crisis still remain and must be addressed.

アジスアベバ発−WFPのヘリコプターによる、エチオピア南東部の洪水被災地への支援物資の空輸が開始した。今回の洪水は80名の死者を出し、交通網に大きな被害を及ぼした。362,000人の被災者が生活手段を失い、122,500人が住居を失った。人道援助機関は、水を媒介したマラリアなどの病気の流行を懸念している。食糧支援のほかに、国連機関とエチオピア政府からの医療品や毛布、調理器具、水の浄化装置セットなどの食糧以外の物資もWFPのヘリコプターで空輸される。洪水で大きな被害を受けたソマリ地域では、今年初めにも干ばつによる深刻な被害を受けており、160万人が人道支援を必要としている。

WFP URGES AFRICAN SUMMIT TO ACT ON HUNGER CRISES: "PUT FOOD FIRST" Khartoum - As Africa's leaders gather today for their AU summit, the United Nations World Food Programme is calling on the continent's leaders and international donors to boost their support for its efforts to tackle hunger and poverty in Africa before millions more lives are lost.

ニカラグア・ホンジュラスでのハリケーン被災者に対し、緊急食糧支援開始 パナマ発　−　9月4日ニカラグアに上陸し、甚大な被害を引き起こしているハリケーン「フェリックス」の被災者に対し、WFPは豆、米、食用油、大豆とトウモロコシの混合食糧などを空輸し、緊急食糧支援を開始した。 ニカラグア北部では強風や建造物崩壊により、6万人もの人々が被害に遭っていると推定される。ゴルダナ・ジャーガーニカラグア副事務所長は、「こうした人々を助けるために、緊急支援を拡大する必要があり、一刻も早く拠出国からの支援が必要である」と述べている。 ハリケーンが発生した4日にはWFPは食糧支援を開始し、5日には、900人に対する10日間分に相当する4.5トンの食糧を空輸した。
