SUDAN BOOSTS SELF-HELP WITH SCHOOL MEAL SUPPORT KHARTOUM – The United Nations World Food Programme today praised decisions by governors of three Sudan States to renew and expand their support to WFP school meals by committing precious resources to monitoring, transport and other support. WFP urged international donors to follow suit.
MASSIVE AID EFFORT CONTAINS GROWTH OF MALNUTRITION IN DARFUR KHARTOUM – Despite the deteriorating security situation in Darfur, a new United Nations assessment has found that overall malnutrition levels have mostly stabilized in 2006 and food insecurity has improved slightly thanks to a stronger international response to the suffering in Sudan’s war-torn west.
WFP EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR VISITS SUDAN AMID FUNDING CRISIS TO FEED 6 MILLION KHARTOUM - The UN World Food Programme Executive Director, James Morris, arrives in Khartoum today to visit the agency’s largest emergency operation, which was hit recently by a severe shortage of funds to feed some 6.1 million people across Sudan.
KENYA RAINS LOWER NUMBER NEEDING FOOD AID TO NEARLY 3 MILLION PEOPLE NAIROBI - Rains have reduced the number of Kenyans in need of food aid because of drought to nearly 3 million people from 3.5 million, the Government of Kenya and United Nations World Food Programme said today. WFP needs US$44 million to continue feeding them for six months.
