2022年、世界ではかつてないほどの食料危機に直面しており、気候危機、紛争、経済的負荷、新型コロナウイルス感染症の影響などが相まって世界で最大8億2,800万人もの人々が飢えや栄養不足に苦しんでいます。さらにウクライナ危機の影響は、食料不安の状況をさらに深刻化・長期化させており、来年も記録的な飢餓に陥るリスクがあるとされています。世界的な食料危機に直面しているなか、日本にいる多くの私たちにとって飢餓を身近に感じにくい面があります。しかし、飢餓は決して遠い国の問題ではありません。

WFP HAILS EUROPEAN COMMISSION FOR EUROS 5 MILLION FOR KENYA DROUGHT NAIROBI – The United Nations World Food Programme today hailed the European Commission for donating Euros 5.05 million (US$5.98 million) in cash to help provide food aid for 3.5 million people in northern and eastern Kenya, saying this was the sort of quick, flexible response needed as the drought worsens.

WFP 国連世界食糧計画はこの週末にかけて、ソマリアとケニアでの洪水により道路を遮断され、病気の蔓延に苦しんでいる１００万人以上の人々に向け、空輸での食糧援助を開始し、同時に陸路と水路からの援助活動も拡大した。WFPは今後数週間で、1,000トンの食糧やその他の物資を空輸することを目指している。これらの物資は国連機関やNGOによってソマリアのシャベレ川、ジュバ川沿いの洪水地帯の村に届けられる。11月以降、計6,200トンのWFPの食糧物資が水路、陸路、空路でソマリア中央部と南部の被災者30万人に配給された。ケニアでは今回の洪水により、北部・北東部の６ヶ所の地域で、およそ56万3千人のケニア人が直接的な被害に遭っていると推定される。同地域のさらに52万人は、以前より干ばつに苦しんでいたところに重ねて洪水の被害を受けたため、引き続き食糧援助を必要としている。
