WFP STARTS FOOD AIRLIFT TO CHILDREN IN EASTERN DRC, AMID FEARS OF FUNDING CRISIS KINSHASA - The United Nations World Food Programme said today that it has recently started airlifting urgent food aid to at least 8,800 needy people in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, although it has not yet received any funding pledges for next year’s operations.

WFP AIRDROPS FOOD AID INTO DR CONGO’S EMBATTLED KATANGA PROVINCE LUBUMBASHI, Democratic Republic of Congo – The United Nations World Food Programme said today it had started dropping food aid from an aircraft into violence-wracked Katanga province in the southeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo – marking the agency’s first food aid airdrops outside Sudan since 1998.

WFP EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR VISITS SUDAN AMID FUNDING CRISIS TO FEED 6 MILLION KHARTOUM - The UN World Food Programme Executive Director, James Morris, arrives in Khartoum today to visit the agency’s largest emergency operation, which was hit recently by a severe shortage of funds to feed some 6.1 million people across Sudan.

アジスアベバ発−WFPのヘリコプターによる、エチオピア南東部の洪水被災地への支援物資の空輸が開始した。今回の洪水は80名の死者を出し、交通網に大きな被害を及ぼした。362,000人の被災者が生活手段を失い、122,500人が住居を失った。人道援助機関は、水を媒介したマラリアなどの病気の流行を懸念している。食糧支援のほかに、国連機関とエチオピア政府からの医療品や毛布、調理器具、水の浄化装置セットなどの食糧以外の物資もWFPのヘリコプターで空輸される。洪水で大きな被害を受けたソマリ地域では、今年初めにも干ばつによる深刻な被害を受けており、160万人が人道支援を必要としている。

チャド首都・ヌジャメナ発−戦闘の拡大により、チャド東部での人道支援が困難になりつつある。チャド東部の都市・アベシェでは先月末、武装勢力によって食糧庫が襲撃され、483トンの食糧が略奪された。ＷＦＰはこのような不安定な状況下での活動は危険と判断し、学校給食プログラムや労働の対価としての食糧援助などの復興支援を一時的に中断するという苦渋の決断を下した。活動の中断は少なくとも5万6千人のチャド人に影響するとみられている。さらに、戦闘が激しさを増すにつれ、WFPをはじめとする国連機関やNGOが、チャド東部の都市・アベシェを拠点とする活動を縮小せざるをえないという事態に直面している。 しかし、WFPは緊急支援については継続の予定。12月分の食糧物資はすでに東部1２か所の難民キャンプに届き、一部では配給が始まっている。
