WFP DIRECTOR WARNS FUNDS RUNNING OUT FOR DISPLACED IN AZERBAIJAN BAKU - The United Nations World Food Programme Executive Director, James Morris, today stressed the need to draw attention to the devastating problems faced by the world’s displaced people, including those in Azerbaijan and now in Lebanon.

WFP FOOD DISTRIBUTED IN BEIRUT’S BATTERED SOUTHERN SUBURBS BEIRUT - Municipal workers today distributed food rations from the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) to vulnerable families in Beirut’s southern suburbs where thousands of homes were damaged or destroyed in 33 days of conflict between Israel and Hizbollah.

WFP 国連世界食糧計画はこの週末にかけて、ソマリアとケニアでの洪水により道路を遮断され、病気の蔓延に苦しんでいる１００万人以上の人々に向け、空輸での食糧援助を開始し、同時に陸路と水路からの援助活動も拡大した。WFPは今後数週間で、1,000トンの食糧やその他の物資を空輸することを目指している。これらの物資は国連機関やNGOによってソマリアのシャベレ川、ジュバ川沿いの洪水地帯の村に届けられる。11月以降、計6,200トンのWFPの食糧物資が水路、陸路、空路でソマリア中央部と南部の被災者30万人に配給された。ケニアでは今回の洪水により、北部・北東部の６ヶ所の地域で、およそ56万3千人のケニア人が直接的な被害に遭っていると推定される。同地域のさらに52万人は、以前より干ばつに苦しんでいたところに重ねて洪水の被害を受けたため、引き続き食糧援助を必要としている。
