LITHUANIA MAKES FIRST WFP DONATION FOR INDONESIA EARTHQUAKE VICTIMS

ROME - The Government of Lithuania has made its first ever donation to the World Food Programme, providing US$37,000 in response to the massive earthquake that hit the Indonesian island of Java last month.

“The World Food Programme is tremendously grateful for this generous donation,” said Anthony Banbury, WFP’s Regional Director for Asia.

“With this help from the government and people of Lithuania, we will provide emergency relief to poor families who have lost their homes and jobs to the natural disasters that continue to plague Indonesia,” Banbury added.

Lithuania is among a number of East European countries to raise their official development assistance over recent years and joins an increasing number of emerging WFP donors from the region.

Less than three weeks since the earthquake struck on 27 May 2006, the World Food Programme has provided food to approximately 182,000 people in Yogyakarta and Central Java province. The agency estimates that 120,000 people will need assistance for the next two months, tapering off to 40,000 people by October ? at an estimated cost of US$5.6 million.
