TRIAGE AGAIN IN AFRICA AS WFP FORCED TO CUT RATIONS FOR MILLIONS ACROSS SUDAN KHARTOUM – The UN World Food Programme said today that a critically slow response to appeals for its emergency operation in Sudan have forced it to cut rations of pulses, sugar and salt for up to 3.5 million people immediately, to help limited stocks last longer.

スーダン・ジュバ発−スーダンで20年以上続いた南北の内戦が終わり、包括的和平合意が結ばれたのは、2005年1月9日。それからちょうど二年が経った。 ＷＦＰは地元住民とのパートナーシップのもと、200万人近く（うち60万人は帰還民）に対する食糧援助、1850キロ以上の道路修復、25万発以上の不発弾除去などを通じて、南スーダンにおける復興に参画してきた。道路修復などのインフラ整備プロジェクトは、人道支援のアクセスや人々の生活の利便性を向上させたとともに、現地における雇用を創出する効果ももたらしてきた。 状況は少しずつ改善しているものの、スーダンが直面している状況は未だ困難なものであり、この地域における平和構築にはまだ相当の時間がかかることが予想される。

スーダン・ジュバ発−ＷＦＰは1月1１日、職員のエマニュエル・チャク・ジョセフ氏（２８）がスーダン南部で何者かによって殺害されたことを発表した。ここ数年でＷＦＰスタッフがスーダンで殺害されたのは初めてのことである。 ジョセフ氏はＷＦＰの現地ドライバーとして、ドイツ技術協力公社（GTZ）による道路建設プロジェクトに参加していた。殺害された日は、スーダン南部の都市・ジュバからトリトという町へ向かう途中であったが、途中で待ち伏せしていた何者かによって自動小銃による攻撃を受けた。この攻撃によって、同乗者のGTZ職員1名と、護衛に当たっていたスーダン人民解放軍（SPLA）の兵士2人が負傷した。 WFPは、自国の平和のために尽力してきたジョセフさんの死に深い悲しみを覚える。

UK DONATION FOR ROADS MAY OPEN NEW ERA OF DRIVING ACROSS SUDAN KHARTOUM – The World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed a donation of US$8.7 million from the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development earmarked for the United Nations food agency’s giant road works project in southern Sudan.
