WFP News Release 2 November 2006 WFP WELCOMES CHINA’S GROWING ROLE AS A MAJOR FOOD DONOR Rome – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed China’s first donation of US $1.75 million since its graduation from food aid at the end of last year. The contribution – made in cash and without conditions -- will fund some of WFP’s most critical operations around the globe.

WFP HAILS EUROPEAN COMMISSION FOR EUROS 5 MILLION FOR KENYA DROUGHT NAIROBI – The United Nations World Food Programme today hailed the European Commission for donating Euros 5.05 million (US$5.98 million) in cash to help provide food aid for 3.5 million people in northern and eastern Kenya, saying this was the sort of quick, flexible response needed as the drought worsens.

HIGH ENERGY BISCUITS AIRLIFTED TO KENYA TO FEED 200,000 FLOOD VICTIMS NAIROBI – A Boeing 747 jumbo jet chartered by the United Nations World Food Programme landed today in Nairobi, delivering 94 metric tons of high energy biscuits from a depot in Brindisi, Italy, for hundreds of thousands of victims of Kenya’s largest floods in years.

VIOLENCE ALONG CHAD/SUDAN BORDER THREATENS THOUSANDS N’DJAMENA – The United Nations World Food Programme warned today that an escalation of the violence that has forced thousands of people from their homes along the Chadian border with Sudan’s Darfur region could seriously impede humanitarian assistance. WFP currently feeds 207,400 Sudanese refugees housed in 12 camps inside Chad.
