WFP WELCOMES JAPAN DONATION
TO KENYA FLOOD RELIEF
YOKOHAMA – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed an announcement by the Government of Japan to donate US$ 300,000 (JPY34.8 million) to its special air operation to reach hundreds of thousands of people affected by floods in Kenya.
“WFP is deeply grateful for Japan’s much needed support in helping the flood-affected in Kenya, where many villages have become inaccessible due to washed-out roads. This contribution will help WFP deliver aid to the most vulnerable people,” said Mihoko Tamamura, Director of WFP’s office in Japan.
Flooding, brought on by intense rainfall in coastal and northeastern Kenya, has caused severe damage in many districts. Many villages are either flooded or have become inaccessible. Reaching the area has become extremely difficult if not impossible. As a result, relief goods and commercial stocks have got stuck in the mud, and not arrived at their destinations by road.
Japan’s donation will be used to support the special air operation to help deliver food supplies to those regions which are unreachable by road. With the rains expected to continue well into January, WFP is especially grateful for this contribution. The floods follow a regional drought this year in which Japan had also assisted many affected people with a US$ 4.7 million (JPY 550 million) aid package.
A special operation has been carried out by WFP to assist in delivering food and relief items (such as mosquito nets, water purification and medical assistance) by air to flood-affected areas in Kenya and Somalia. The total cost of the Special Operation is US$ 16.5 million (JPY 1.9 billion) of which US$ 4 million (JPY464 million) had been allocated for Kenya.
